Unicode Block - Arabic Extended-C
Arabic Extended-C is a relatively recent addition to the digital encoding of Arabic script, primarily designed to support historical and orthographic variants that were previously missing from standard Arabic character sets. It includes a range of letters and diacritical marks used in classical texts, such as additional forms of the letter ṣād and ẓāʾ, as well as markers for vocalization and consonantal distinctions found in Quranic and scholarly manuscripts. This block also accommodates certain Maghrebi and Andalusian writing traditions, along with special signs for notations like the “sukun” in specific recitation styles. Its main purpose is to ensure that digitized editions of old Arabic documents can faithfully represent their original orthography, thereby aiding researchers and linguists in preserving the nuanced written heritage of the Arabic language.
