Batak is a script used to write the Batak languages of northern Sumatra, primarily Toba, Karo, Mandailing, Simalungun, and Pakpak. The characters in this set are an abugida, where each basic consonant carries an inherent vowel that can be altered or silenced by diacritical marks placed above, below, or beside the letter. It includes distinct letters for syllables and final consonants, as well as punctuation marks and a ligature for the sacred syllable "nga". Traditionally written on bark, bamboo, and stone, the script is now mainly used for cultural preservation and ceremonial inscriptions, though it has seen a revival in educational and digital contexts.
