Bopomofo is a phonetic script used primarily for teaching Mandarin Chinese pronunciation, especially in Taiwan, where it is known as Zhuyin Fuhao. It consists of symbols representing initial consonants, medial vowels, and final sounds, making it a compact and systematic alternative to the Latin-based Pinyin system. The script includes characters for the 37 standard phonemes of Mandarin, along with a few additional marks for tone indication, though tone marks are often handled by combining diacritical marks outside the core letter set. Bopomofo is also used in dictionaries, children’s textbooks, and keyboard input methods, and it appears in some non-Mandarin contexts, such as phonetic notation for other Chinese dialects. Its design ensures that each symbol is visually distinct and easily learned by young students, contributing to its enduring role in Taiwanese education and linguistic preservation.
