Unicode Block - Hangul Compatibility Jamo
Hangul Compatibility Jamo is a collection of precomposed Korean syllable-initial and syllable-final consonant clusters, as well as vowel symbols, that were designed to maintain compatibility with older Korean character encodings, particularly the KPS 9566 and Wansung standards. These characters duplicate forms found in the standard Hangul Jamo block but are positioned in a way that allows software to handle them as single, fixed-width units, which is useful for legacy data and certain typographic contexts. While the modern Korean writing system typically uses fully composed syllable blocks, these compatibility jamo serve as a fallback for representing individual phonetic components without requiring complex shaping or recombination, ensuring that text encoded in older systems can still be displayed and processed correctly in contemporary environments.
