Unicode Block - Garay

Garay is a relatively recent addition to the digital encoding of scripts, designed to represent the Garay alphabet, which was created in the 1960s by the Senegalese inventor Assane Faye for writing the Wolof language. This script features a distinctive, flowing style with many letters that appear as horizontal strokes, often connected, and it is written from left to right. The block includes a full set of consonant and vowel characters, along with punctuation and diacritical marks needed for accurate phonetic transcription of Wolof, including its glottal stops and vowel length distinctions. Its inclusion in modern text systems helps preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the Garay script, enabling its use in digital communication and documentation.
