Unicode Block - Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms
Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms is a collection of characters that enables the visual alignment of East Asian text with monospaced Latin scripts, containing both fullwidth versions of standard ASCII characters and halfwidth variants of katakana, as well as halfwidth hangul and punctuation. These forms allow CJK documents to mix proportional-width ideographs with fixed-width Latin or katakana without breaking grid layouts, typically by mapping standard ASCII glyphs to twice their usual width and providing narrower alternatives for Japanese katakana. The halfwidth katakana are particularly useful in legacy computing environments and teletext systems, while fullwidth Latin, digits, and symbols are employed in Chinese and Japanese typography to ensure consistent spacing within line-based text. The block also includes a few special characters like the halfwidth ideographic space supporting a wide range of technical and formatting needs across different writing systems.
