Hatran is a historical script used to write the Aramaic dialect of the ancient city of Hatra, located in present-day northern Iraq, and it dates from roughly the 2nd century BCE to the 3rd century CE. The characters in this script were primarily carved into stone for monumental inscriptions, as well as on other media like pottery and coins, and they represent a cursive variant of the wider Aramaic writing tradition. The script’s letters are written from right to left, and the corpus of surviving texts includes dedications, legal documents, and religious or commemorative carvings that shed light on the region’s cultural and political life under the Parthian and early Sasanian empires.
