Unicode Block - Kana Supplement
Kana Supplement is a collection of historic and variant Japanese syllabary characters, primarily consisting of hentaigana, which are the nonstandard, cursive forms of hiragana used in older texts and personal correspondence before the modern standardized writing system was established. It also includes additional archaic kana such as the small “koto” symbol and other rare characters that were once employed in practical use but are no longer part of everyday writing. These glyphs preserve the typographic and calligraphic diversity of pre-modern Japanese, allowing scholars and digital archives to accurately reproduce historical documents, while also supporting linguistic research into the evolution of Japanese orthography and enabling fonts to cover a wider range of traditional literary works.
