Lao is the standardized script used for writing the Lao language, primarily spoken in Laos and among Lao communities in neighboring countries, and it is also employed for other minority languages in the region. The script consists of consonants, vowels, tone marks, and various punctuation and numeric signs, arranged in a visually distinctive style with rounded, cursive letterforms that lack word spacing, instead using spaces to separate phrases or clauses. It includes special characters for indicating syllable-final consonants, vowel length, and tonal distinctions, as well as a set of decimal digits, and it is designed to support the phonetic structure of Lao, which is a tonal and largely monosyllabic language. The script’s layout follows a left-to-right direction, and its characters are encoded to work seamlessly with modern digital text processing while preserving the traditional orthography.
