Latin-1 Supplement is the second of three sequential blocks that encode the most common Western European characters, extending the basic ASCII set with accented letters like é, ñ, and ü, as well as punctuation marks, currency symbols such as £ and ¥, and a set of control characters inherited from ISO/IEC 8859-1. These control characters, which range from undefined spacing functions to rarely used format codes, are largely deprecated in modern usage but remain part of the standard for backward compatibility. The block’s primary purpose is to provide a one-to-one mapping for the Latin-1 character set, ensuring that legacy text and web pages that rely on this encoding can be represented in Unicode without altering their original byte values.
