Low Surrogates Unicode Block
Low Surrogates is the second half of the surrogate pair mechanism in the UTF-16 encoding scheme, where each high surrogate from the preceding range pairs with a low surrogate to represent a single supplementary character beyond the Basic Multilingual Plane. These code points are never assigned to actual characters themselves, but instead act as placeholders that, when combined with a high surrogate, allow software to correctly decode and display the full range of Unicode’s 1.1 million possible characters. Because they are reserved exclusively for internal encoding use, any occurrence of a low surrogate without a preceding high surrogate is considered an encoding error, and these values cannot be used for ordinary text or symbol mapping. This design ensures that the UTF-16 system can maintain backward compatibility with older 16-bit formats while expanding the character set in a structured and unambiguous way.
