Miao is a script used to write the A-Hmao language and other related Hmongic dialects, primarily in southwestern China. It was developed in the early 20th century by Samuel Pollard and his collaborators, combining Latin letters with unique phonetic symbols and diacritical marks to represent tones and sounds that are not found in standard Latin orthographies. The script features circular and curved character forms, with vowels and consonants arranged in a distinctive syllabic style, and it also includes punctuation and tone marks specific to the language’s tonal system. While historically printed in religious and educational materials, it has seen renewed interest for digital use, with the encoded characters supporting both historical texts and modern communication among Miao-speaking communities.
