Unicode Block - Phonetic Extensions
Phonetic Extensions is a collection of characters designed primarily for the transcription of spoken language, particularly in linguistics and dialectology. It includes a wide array of modified Latin letters, such as small capital variants, superscript forms, and letters with added diacritical marks, which together allow for the precise notation of subtle phonetic distinctions like vowel quality, nasalization, and consonant articulation. Many of these glyphs are derived from the International Phonetic Alphabet or historical phonetic scripts, and they serve to supplement standard Latin letters when more specialized symbols are required for academic writing, dictionaries, or language documentation. The block also contains a few characters used for phonetic notation in older or non-European languages, ensuring that researchers can represent sounds that fall outside the typical alphabet without resorting to ad hoc symbols.
