Unicode Block - Siddham
Siddham is a historic script used primarily for writing Sanskrit and other sacred Buddhist texts, particularly in East Asia, where it was transmitted from India via the Silk Road. This character set encodes the letters and diacritical marks of the Siddham syllabary, which is also known as Bonji in Japan, where it remains significant in Shingon and Tendai esoteric Buddhist practices for ritual inscriptions and visual meditation. The included glyphs cover consonants, vowels, vowel signs, and various punctuation marks, all designed to represent the phonetic structure of Sanskrit with high fidelity. Though no longer used for everyday communication, the script preserves an important link to medieval Indian calligraphy and the spread of Mahayana Buddhism.
