Tagalog Unicode Block

Tagalog is a script historically used to write the Tagalog language, primarily in the Philippines, before the adoption of the Latin alphabet. This set of characters, which is part of the broader encoding of Philippine scripts, consists of seventeen basic consonant letters, three vowel markers, and a distinct virama symbol, used to suppress the inherent vowel sound of a consonant. The script is written in an abugida style, where each base character represents a consonant with an inherent "a" vowel, and diacritical marks are added to change that vowel to "e/i" or "o/u". Although largely out of practical use today, it remains significant for historical documents and cultural heritage, and it is supported in modern digital text systems to preserve and revive the traditional writing system.
