Unicode Block - Tai Viet
Tai Viet is a script used for writing several Tai languages, including Tai Dam, Tai Don, and Tai Daeng, primarily spoken in Vietnam and neighboring regions of Laos and China. This writing system features distinct consonant and vowel characters, along with tone marks and special diacritics, arranged in a linear fashion rather than using stacking or complex ligatures. The script’s design reflects the phonological needs of these tonal languages, with separate symbols for initial consonants, vowels, and final consonants, as well as a set of digits and punctuation marks. Its introduction into digital text encoding helps preserve and support the literary traditions and modern communication of Tai-speaking communities, which previously relied on localized or non-standardized fonts.
