Tifinagh is a script used to write the Amazigh (Berber) languages of North Africa, with its modern standardized form known as Neo-Tifinagh. This writing system features a distinct set of consonants and a few vowels, and it is written from left to right, unlike the ancient Libyco-Berber script from which it descends. The characters in this range are predominantly used in Morocco, Algeria, Libya, and among Tuareg communities in the Sahara, where the script holds cultural and national significance, particularly in Morocco where it is taught in schools and used in official signage. The graphemes include variations for emphatic consonants, labialized sounds, and a small set of diacritics, reflecting the phonetic needs of different Amazigh dialects. While historically the script was often inscribed on rock or in manuscripts, its modern digital encoding supports its use in contemporary communication, preserving a rich ancestral heritage.
