Unicode Block - Tirhuta
Tirhuta is a script historically used for writing the Maithili language, primarily in the Mithila region of northern Bihar, India, and parts of Nepal. This alphabetic script, with its distinctive rounded forms and horizontal top strokes, was traditionally employed for both literary and administrative purposes before largely falling out of common use in favor of Devanagari. The encoded characters include consonants, independent and dependent vowels, vowel signs, various diacritical marks, digits, and punctuation, alongside several signs specific to Maithili religious and ceremonial texts. Despite its diminished everyday usage, the script retains cultural importance for the preservation of Maithili heritage and is currently supported in digital typography, allowing for accurate representation and revival of historical documents and contemporary scholarly works.
