These characters do not inherently carry a left-to-right or right-to-left direction, so they take on the surrounding text’s direction when placed between strong directional runs. However, when a Common Separator appears between two numbers, it is treated as an European Number Separator, assuming numeric formatting context. This behavior ensures that punctuation and spaces do not disrupt the logical reading order of mixed-script text, while still allowing numerals to be grouped correctly. In practical terms, Common Separator characters help maintain clarity in sentences that switch between languages, such as Hebrew and English, by preventing ambiguous visual ordering at word or phrase boundaries.
