It acts like a strong left-to-right counterpart but in reverse, creating an isolated embedding whose content is rendered right-to-left, while the surrounding text maintains its original direction. This is typically used to wrap a segment of Arabic or Hebrew text within a left-to-right context, ensuring that punctuation and neutral characters are resolved correctly. The embedding is ended by a corresponding pop directional formatting character, which restores the previous directional state, allowing nested or sequential overrides without permanently altering the text flow.
