Emoji Modifier

Emoji Modifier is a character property that designates a small set of sixteen codepoints, specifically the Fitzpatrick skin tone scale from U+1F3FB to U+1F3FE and U+1F3FF, plus the light and dark variants. These modifiers are intended to be combined with preceding emoji characters, such as person or hand symbols, to alter their skin tone representation. When an emoji supports modification, it is flagged as having an Emoji_Modifier_Base property, allowing the modifier to be appended directly. Without this pairing, modifiers render as standalone symbols or may display incorrectly. The system enables inclusive customization of human‑like emoji across diverse skin tones, but only certain emoji are compatible, and the modifier must follow the base character immediately. This mechanism ensures consistent visual adaptation across platforms, though not all emoji accept modifiers, such as those depicting non‑human objects or faces.
