Emoji Modifier Base is a binary character property that identifies a small set of emoji characters capable of being followed by an emoji modifier, specifically the five skin tone modifiers ranging from light to dark. When a base emoji, such as a waving hand or a person standing, is immediately followed by one of these modifiers, the two characters render as a single composite glyph reflecting the chosen skin tone. This mechanism enables inclusive representation across diverse skin tones, but only for characters explicitly designated as bases. Common examples include hand gestures, people, and body parts, while symbols like flags or everyday objects are excluded. The property ensures consistent behavior across platforms, allowing text rendering engines to correctly combine the base and modifier into one visual unit without altering the semantic meaning of the base character itself.
