General Category - Format
Format is a General Category value that identifies characters which are invisible or have no glyph of their own but affect the layout, rendering, or processing of surrounding text. These characters include soft hyphens, zero-width joiners and non-joiners, bidirectional control marks, and other formatting codes like the Arabic presentational forms and variation selectors. While they are not typically displayed, they serve critical functions such as indicating line breaks, controlling text direction, preventing ligature formation, or modifying the appearance of adjacent characters. Because they carry no semantic content themselves, they are often ignored during searching, sorting, or string comparison, but they must be preserved to maintain the intended visual or textual behavior of a document.
