Mark is a character classification that encompasses all combining and standalone marks, such as accents, diacritics, vowel signs, and tonal indicators. These characters are typically used to modify or alter the meaning, pronunciation, or appearance of a preceding base letter, and they do not appear alone in normal text. The category is subdivided into three types: spacing combining marks, nonspacing marks, and enclosing marks, with the first two being the most common. Nonspacing marks are placed above, below, or through a base character without occupying additional horizontal space, while spacing marks do take up room. Enclosing marks surround a base character, like a circle or box. Marks are essential for writing systems such as Indic scripts, Arabic, Hebrew, and many European languages that use accents, and they play a critical role in text rendering, sorting, and search, as they must be handled separately from base characters for correct display and processing.
