E Base is a classification used to identify characters that can serve as the base of an emoji sequence, specifically those representing a person or object capable of receiving an emoji modifier, such as a skin tone. These characters include certain human figures, like a person walking or a hand gesture, but not ordinary letters or digits. When an emoji modifier follows an E Base character, the two combine into a single grapheme cluster, meaning they are treated as one visual unit for text editing, cursor movement, and line breaking. This behavior ensures that a modified emoji stays intact and does not split across lines or get separated during selection. E Base characters do not include emoji that are already fully qualified or those that lack a modifier-capable form, focusing strictly on the specific set that can be extended.
