Ideographic

Ideographic is a binary character property that identifies characters traditionally used in the writing systems of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, primarily for logographic scripts. These characters represent entire words or morphemes rather than sounds, and include the unified CJK ideographs, as well as compatibility ideographs and certain radicals. The property covers a wide range of blocks, such as CJK Unified Ideographs, Extension A through H, and specific supplementary planes, excluding punctuation, kana, or hangul. It is used for text segmentation, font selection, and language-specific rendering, helping to distinguish ideographic glyphs from phonetic or alphabetic ones. The property also aids in sorting, collation, and in determining vertical text layout, where ideographs typically maintain a square aspect ratio and can be rotated or spaced differently in typography.
