Joining Group
Joining Group is a character property that defines the visual shape a letter takes when it connects to adjacent letters in scripts like Arabic, Syriac, and N’Ko, which use cursive forms. It assigns each letter a specific group name, such as NUN, BEH, or AIN, indicating the distinctive part of the letter that joins, like a stroke or loop, and how that part interacts with neighboring characters. This property works alongside the Joining Type, which controls whether a character can connect on the right, left, or neither side, to determine the exact contextual forms a letter adopts in a word. For example, two different letters that share the same joining group will look similar when connected, which is crucial for correct rendering and text shaping. The group values are encoded as consecutive integers in the Character Database, allowing software to map each character to its appropriate initial, medial, final, or isolated form.
