Non-Joining is the value that marks a character as completely isolated in cursive scripts, such as Arabic or Syriac, meaning it neither connects to the letter before it nor to the letter after it. When a Non-Joining character appears in a word, it forces a visual break in the connected letterforms, so adjacent characters on either side must render in their isolated forms, regardless of their own joining capabilities. This behavior is essential for correctly shaping text that includes punctuation, diacritics, or certain standalone symbols, which would otherwise disrupt the expected ligature flow, and it ensures that such characters do not accidentally form misleading connections with neighboring letters.
