In East Asian text, these characters often behave like ideographs, allowing breaks before or after them, while in Western contexts, they act like alphabetic letters, breaking only at spaces or hyphens. This dual nature means that without additional language or font information, a line breaking algorithm cannot definitively decide whether a break is permitted, so it must rely on heuristics, user settings, or neighboring character classes. Examples include certain punctuation, combining marks, or rare symbols that straddle both writing systems. The value ensures that line breaking remains flexible and accurate across mixed-script documents, preventing awkward splits while preserving natural reading flow.
