This means that a line break is not allowed immediately after an open punctuation mark; instead, the mark remains attached to the word or symbol that follows it, preventing awkward visual separation. This rule helps maintain the natural grouping of syntactical units, ensuring that an opening bracket stays with the content it introduces, though breaks before the mark itself are generally permitted, as in “(a long list” where the parenthesis can begin a new line.
