Script - Cham
Cham is a script used primarily for writing the Eastern Cham language, spoken by the Cham people in central Vietnam and parts of Cambodia. It is an abugida, where consonant letters carry an inherent vowel, and diacritics modify or suppress that vowel. The script features distinct letters for initial and final consonants, as well as separate vowel signs, and is written horizontally from left to right. Historically derived from the Brahmi family, Cham has a long literary tradition, though its modern usage is limited and often supplemented by the Latin alphabet in education and official contexts. The Unicode encoding of Cham includes both the traditional ligature-heavy forms and modern simplified variants, supporting the community’s efforts to preserve their cultural heritage in digital communication.
