Script - Elbasan

Elbasan is a historical script used primarily for writing the Albanian language, particularly in the 18th century, with its most famous surviving text being the Elbasan Gospel Manuscript. It consists of 40 letters, mostly based on Greek and Latin forms, with some unique characters, and is written from left to right. The script is named after the city of Elbasan in central Albania, where the manuscript was discovered. Today, it is of great interest to paleographers and historians, as it represents an early, distinct attempt to create a standardized alphabet for Albanian, separate from the influences of Greek, Latin, or Ottoman Turkish writing systems.
