Script - Ethiopic

Unicode Version 18.0

Ethiopic is a script used primarily for writing Geʽez, Amharic, Tigrinya, and other languages of the Horn of Africa, with a continuous history spanning over two millennia. It originated as an abjad for the ancient Geʽez language and later evolved into a syllabary, where each character represents a consonant-vowel combination, with modifications to the base consonant shapes indicating different vowels. The script is written left to right, features a set of 26 basic consonants that can be combined with seven or more vowel diacritics, and includes additional characters for labiovelar sounds and modern loanwords. In textual data, the Ethiopic script value encompasses all characters used for these languages, including historic and modern forms, punctuation, and digits, enabling consistent identification and processing of text written in this ancient yet actively used writing system.
