Script - Old Italic

Unicode Version 18.0

Old Italic is a script used across the Italian peninsula and parts of the Alps from roughly the 8th to 1st century BCE, primarily for Etruscan, Oscan, Umbrian, and early Latin inscriptions. It derives from a Greek alphabet brought by Euboean colonists, adapting letters for local phonetics, and is characterized by right-to-left or boustrophedon writing, with angular, geometric letterforms. Its glyph set includes 21 to 26 letters, featuring special signs for vowels and aspirates, and it later influenced the development of the Latin alphabet.
