Script - Khmer
Khmer is a script used to write the Khmer language, the official language of Cambodia, as well as several minority languages in the region. It is an abugida, where each consonant carries an inherent vowel that can be modified with diacritical marks, and it also includes independent vowels, numerals, and punctuation. The script features a distinctive rounded, angular appearance, which historically evolved from the Pallava script of southern India. In character encoding, all Khmer characters are grouped together under this script value, allowing software to correctly render, sort, and analyze text in the language, including its two historical forms: the modern Khmer characters and the older Khmer symbols used for archaic texts. This classification ensures that digital systems can distinguish Khmer from neighboring scripts like Thai or Lao, despite visual similarities.
