Lepcha is an abugida script used for writing the Lepcha language, spoken primarily in Sikkim, India, and parts of Nepal and Bhutan. It features a distinctive rounded, flowing appearance, historically written with a reed pen on paper or bark, with letters hanging from a virtual horizontal line rather than sitting on it. The script includes 34 consonants, 7 vowel diacritics, and a set of independent vowel letters, along with markers for medial consonants and final consonants. Its unique orthographic rules include the use of a visible vowel carrier, the omission of inherent vowels in certain contexts, and special conjunct forms. Lepcha also employs a set of punctuation marks and numerals, and it has been used for religious texts, official documents, and folk literature.
