Moon (Moon code, Moon script, Moon type) is a tactile writing system developed in the 19th century by Dr. William Moon for visually impaired individuals, using raised geometric shapes partially derived from Latin letters. In Unicode, it has a dedicated block (U+0870–U+08AF) containing 45 encoded characters that represent its distinct symbols, including letters, contractions, and punctuation. The script is designed to be easier to learn than Braille for those who lose sight later in life, as its forms mimic print letters more closely. Unicode’s encoding allows digital text to be rendered in Moon type, preserving its unique tactile forms across platforms and enabling assistive technology to convert standard text into this system. Unlike Braille, which uses a cell-based matrix, Moon relies on curved and angular strokes, making it less space-efficient but more intuitive for certain users.
