Script - Old Permic

Old Permic is a historical script used for writing the Komi language and related Uralic languages in the Perm region of northeastern European Russia, primarily during the 14th to 17th centuries. It was created by Saint Stephen of Perm, who adapted Greek and Cyrillic letters alongside indigenous tamga symbols to produce a distinct alphabet of around 24 characters. In the Unicode “Script” property, this value identifies characters specifically from that ancient writing system, ranging from its vowels and consonants to punctuation marks, allowing digital text to preserve and distinguish this cultural artifact from other scripts. The script fell out of common use in the 17th century, replaced by Cyrillic, but its Unicode encoding ensures that manuscripts and modern scholarly works can be accurately represented and searched.
