Script - Runic
Runic is a script value assigned to characters originating from the Elder Futhark, Younger Futhark, Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, and related medieval runic writing systems, encompassing both older inscriptions and later Norse and English usage. It covers letters, punctuation, and special signs like the Odal and Algiz, as well as encoded variants for phonetic and epigraphic needs. These characters are primarily used for historical texts, rune poems, and modern revivalist writing, with codepoints scattered across the Runic block (U+16A0–U+16FF) alongside a few related additions. The script value helps identify these angular, often vertical-and-diagonal glyphs as a cohesive system distinct from Latin or other alphabets, even when embedded in modern digital contexts. It does not include runes adapted into fictional or decorative sets unless those are historically attested, focusing instead on authentic Germanic inscriptions and their manuscript traditions.
