Sarati is a script value used to encode the artificial writing system invented by J.R.R. Tolkien for his legendarium. It represents an early, cursive alphabet that Tolkien developed before his better‑known Tengwar script, featuring both consonant and vowel signs arranged in a flowing, calligraphic style. The Sarati character set includes letters for various phonetic distinctions, diacritic marks for vowels, and punctuation, all designed to write several of Tolkien’s invented languages, such as Quenya and Valarin. In digital text, this script value allows software to correctly render and identify the distinct glyph shapes, which are often angular yet tied to a flexible stroke order, and to apply proper shaping rules where needed. Although less widely used than Tengwar, Sarati holds historical importance for Tolkien fans and scholars studying his constructed writing systems.
