Vai is a script used primarily by the Vai people of Liberia and Sierra Leone, notable for its unique syllabary system of over 200 characters. Each Vai character represents a syllable, combining a consonant sound with a vowel, making it a complete and independent writing system. It was invented in the early 19th century by Momolu Duwalu Bukele as a means to write the Vai language, and it gained recognition for its indigenous origins, distinct from European or Arabic influences. The script underwent several reforms, with its modern standardized form adopted in the 1960s. In digital text processing, Vai characters are assigned a dedicated block, ensuring proper display and handling across platforms. Its syllabic structure contrasts with alphabetic scripts, requiring specific shaping for diacritics and tone marks. Despite limited widespread use, Vai remains culturally significant for preserving the Vai language and heritage, and it is actively taught in some communities today.
