Script - Yi
Yi is a script value used to identify text written in the Yi language, an indigenous language of southwestern China, primarily associated with the Yi ethnic group. This value covers two distinct historical writing systems: the classical Yi script, which is a logographic and syllabic system with thousands of characters, and the modern standardized Yi syllabary, which was officially codified in the 1970s with 756 basic characters. In digital text processing, the Yi value helps software correctly render, sort, and search these characters, distinguishing them from Chinese Han characters that often appear alongside them in the same documents. It also enables proper font selection and text-to-speech conversion for Yi-language content, ensuring that characters like the syllabic signs for “ꀀ” or “ꁌ” are treated as part of a cohesive writing system rather than as isolated symbols.
