Upright is a designation for characters that must remain in their original, vertical orientation when text is rotated for vertical writing systems, such as those used in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean. These characters, including most Latin letters, digits, and punctuation, do not tilt or rotate with the line’s direction; instead, they stand upright relative to the top of the page. In effect, an upright character retains its normal reading angle even within vertical text, ensuring legibility and correct semantic meaning, like parentheses or full-width forms, which would otherwise appear sideways or misaligned.
