Unicode Block - Greek and Coptic
Greek and Coptic is the primary encoding for the Greek script in digital text, encompassing both the modern Greek alphabet used today and the historical Coptic script of Egypt, which derived from Greek letters. It includes the standard 24 Greek letters in their uppercase and lowercase forms, along with additional archaic letters like digamma, koppa, and sampi, as well as punctuation and diacritical marks such as accents and breathing marks. The block also provides the Coptic letters that were added to represent sounds not found in Greek, though later Unicode versions moved most Coptic characters to a separate dedicated block. This unified coverage ensures that classical texts, Byzantine manuscripts, and modern Greek writing can all be represented accurately in a single character set.
