Vithkuqi is a historical alphabet used primarily for writing the Albanian language, originating in the eighteenth century and named after its creator, Naum Veqilharxhi. This script, which features distinct letterforms for both uppercase and lowercase characters, was designed to replace the diverse and often inconsistent writing systems previously employed for Albanian, aiming to unify the language’s written form. The encoded characters support the full range of sounds in the Vithkuqi repertoire, including vowels and consonants, with some letters possessing contextual or final forms similar to Arabic or Greek scripts. Though it never achieved widespread adoption before being overshadowed by the Latin-based Albanian alphabet, the Vithkuqi script remains of significant historical and cultural interest, and its inclusion in digital standards ensures preservation and scholarly study of this unique writing system.
