This letter represents the first consonant of the Elymaic alphabet, akin to the Semitic "aleph" from which it derives, and it symbolizes a glottal stop or a vowel carrier. The character was added to the Unicode Standard as part of the Elymaic block in version 12.0, released in March 2019, to support the digital preservation and scholarly study of this historical script, which was primarily used for inscribing coins, seals, and short inscriptions.
