U+0473 "ѳ" Cyrillic Small Letter Fita Unicode Character

Unicode Version 17.0

ѳ

U+0473 "ѳ" Cyrillic Small Letter Fita is a historical letter used in the early Cyrillic alphabet to represent the Greek letter theta and originally denoted the voiceless dental fricative sound "th" as in the English word "thin." In the modern Russian alphabet, it was abolished during the orthographic reform of 1918 and replaced by the letter "Ф" (ef) for the "f" sound, as the distinction between them had been lost in pronunciation. Today, it is primarily found in Church Slavonic texts and in the transliteration of Greek words where theta appears, serving as a relic of older linguistic and orthographic traditions.
